Call for Papers
Phenomenology and Mind invites submissions for a special issue, in French and in English, dedicated to “Qu’est-ce qu’une règle? Perspectives ontologiques et pragmatiques” (“What is a rule? Ontological and pragmatic perspectives”). The issue will gather works from philosophers all around the world in order to investigate the nature of rules and norms from the perspectives of ontology and pragmatics, with a special focus on legal rules and legal norms.
The main purpose of this special issue is to provide a critical overview of some of the most interesting topics and methodologies from the current philosophical debate. In line with the interdisciplinary spirit of the Journal, possible areas of inquiry include (but are by no means limited to):
(1) Philosophy of Law
(2) Philosophy of Language and Semiotics
(3) Deontic Logic (with a special focus on philosophical issues)
(4) Phenomenology and Social Ontology
(5) Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science and Neuroscience
(6) Ethics and Metaethics
(7) Legal Anthropology
(8) Ethology.
The issue will present the state-of-the-art research in theoretical and experimental philosophy, with a special focus on the following issues:
(1) What is a rule? What is a norm? What is the ontological status of rules and norms?
(2) Are norms linguistic entities, or language-dependent entities?
(3) What is the relationship between norms and norm-creating acts?
(4) What is the relationship between the validity and the existence of rules and norms?
(5) In what sense are rules and norms respectively objects and means of interpretation?
(6) In what sense a norm can be a “reason for action”?
(7) What kind of logical relationships are possible between rules or norms?
(8) Do rules and norms involve, or consist in, specific psychological, emotional, or neurological phenomena?
(9) Is normative and norm-related behavior specific to human beings, or is it common to other species?
Phenomenology and Mind is the Journal of the Faculty of Philosophy of San Raffaele University (Milan). It was founded in 2011 and since then has hosted works of outstanding philosophers such as Lynne Baker, Thomas Fuchs, Anna Elisabetta Galeotti, Shaun Gallagher, Margaret Gilbert, Jürgen Habermas, Edward Harcourt, Robin Jeshion, Dieter Lohmar, Michael Pauen, John R. Searle, Nadia Urbinati, and many others. The journal is anonymously peer-reviewed and open-access. We are committed to publishing papers of high academic quality and making them accessible to a wide audience. Submissions from underrepresented groups in philosophy are particularly encouraged.

Submission Details
Papers can be submitted in French or in English.
Submissions should be sent to info@phenomenologyandmind.eu by April 15th, 2017. E-mails containing submissions should bear the title “PaM QQR submission”. Manuscripts should not exceed 3.500 words in length and they should be in .doc format. Submissions must be prepared for double blind review. Manuscripts should not contain any identifying information and must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet containing
● the name of the author(s),
● the title of the submitted paper,
● the author’s affiliation (if any) and contact information,
● an abstract of no more than 700 characters (spacing included),
● 4 or 5 keywords.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by June 15th, 2017.
